I LOVED the location of the sophistication of this hotel with the noted bonus of access to thermal pools and spa to take a much needed rest after a hot day and/or walking around town, cave hike, or visiting all the sites! A 2-night stay was the perfect amount of time for those who are trying to see a ton of regions, but if you have time to embrace the dolce far niente of Italy, 3-nights would provide the slower pace to the Italian life. The property boasted 180 degree views of the sassi lit up at night or the orange glow in the morning. The higher the room location, the more landscape you can see, but you can easily walk up to the other levels to gain other perspectives should you have a room on the first or second level. They have an elevator, but it was fun to walk the outside perimeter stairs for different perspectives. It was also an easy walk into the main part of town (take a right when you head out of the hotel for a shorter stair walk), but I would only suggest to stay in the sassi if you are will and able bodied, and healthy to walk stairs as you will need to climb a lot of stairs as part of the adventure to get lost and get in and out of the sassi / hotel. Otherwise, there are plenty of accommodation options on the main street or perimeter where you can overlook the sassi as well. The hotel was well kept, the rooms had closed or open door options to let light in or keep dark and cool, great water pressure, cool AC, a shuttle service from their preferred parking lot they will advise, and helped with luggage for those of us who always unnecessarily overpack.

Matera is one of those magical places, it has gone from being the “shame of Italy” to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to one of the 2019 European Capitals of Culture. The city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in history. It has been the filming location for many movies. The ancient architecture, the cave dwellings, the views at every turn, with that less touristy feel, made it one of my absolute favorite site of my 3 weeks in Italy... I had that smile the entire day! There are a lot of stairs, hillside cliffs, to walk up and down, Matera provenant itself challenging, and to beat the heat, the early morning, and late night discoveries happened. I stayed in this famous cave hotel, including the vistas and the underground Roman baths... one day was not sufficient! Arrivederci Matera !

The breakfast was amazing, with a wide variety of options and live harp music, staff at breakfast room were very friendly. The room was very comfortable and clean, uniquely located inside a stone cave. Since we were traveling with children, we couldn't experience the spa, which is only open to those 18 and older. If you're driving, the hotel suggests parking outside the old town for 20 euros per day. If you have more than just a backpack, I recommend calling the hotel for a shuttle. Although it's only 300 meters walk to the hotel, there are many stairs, and combined with the hot weather we experienced, it can be quite challenging, haha.

We stayed in the Junior Family Suite depéndance cave room. It was a unique experience, just amazing and we loved it. Just a small note to say that the photos provided on booking.com show a jacuzzi bath , which is a bit misleading because it didn’t have one but it didn’t spoil it for us. The room was huge with a beautiful private courtyard, the thermal spa was gorgeous and the breakfast was delicious. Hated leaving and will definitely return

Tracey

Everything! I think all of the rooms are accessed through the terrace so there is a table and chair out front with the most amazing view of matera . The spa was even better than the pictures , you go through that room shown above and there’s two little circle areas with seating in the last. The rooms were really nicely decorated and clean and pretty spacious for Italy. Breakfast was a lovely spread that i wish I had more appetite for!
